The woman who may have been Northern New York's oldest resident is dead. Hattie C. Yelle, 105, of 136 Baker St., long-time Saranac Lake resident, died Saturday at the Uihlein Mercy Center, Lake Placid. She had been in failing health for two years.  Mrs. Yelle, who would have celebrated her 106th birthday this week, was believed to be the oldest person in Northern New York. She entered the Lake Placid rest home at the age of 104.

She had never been in a hospital in her life until she was 100,'' said her daughter, Mrs. Doris Shatraw, Saranac Lake. Mrs. Yelle, who lived on farms in Jefferson County about 20 years, traveled to Florida each winter through her 101st year,'' said Mrs. Shatraw.

The funeral will be at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church. Spring burial will be in Antwerp Cemetery.  Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Fortune Funeral Home.

Several brothers and sisters also died before her.

Born in Negaunee, Mich., on March 10, 1882, a daughter of Louis and Malvina Shackette Miner, she married Edward Yelle on May 12, 1908. The couple spent their married life on farms in Roger Crossing and Antwerp. Mr. Yelle died April 22, 1932, at the age of 52.

Mrs. Yelle had lived with her daughter, Mrs. Shattraw, at Saranac Lake for the past 50 years. She was employed as a housekeeper at Saranac Lake and also worked in a glove factory there until the age of 65.  Having enjoyed excellent health for almost all of her life, Mrs. Yelle was a communicant of St. Bernard's Church, as well as an avid traveler and crocheter.

Notes for Louis Miner:

Louis Miner, the father of Harriet (Miner) Yelle, was a Union soldier in the U.S. Civil War.

Louis -- born September 3, 1845 -- grew up in Ausable Forks, New York, where he lived with his parents, Joseph and Natalia, and his brothers and sister. According to Civil War military records presented on Ancestry.com, a genealogical website, Louis Miner, age 18, enlisted as a private in the New York 96th Infantry Regiment in Black Brook, New York on December, 18, 1863.  This date is three months after Louis 18th birthday.  At least part of the time, if not all, he was in Company A.  He mustered out of the 96th Regiment as a private on February 6, 1866 at City Point, Virginia.

During the time of Louis' enlistment, the 96th was involved in some important battles such as:

Drewry's Bluff, Virginia, May 14-17, 1864

Cold Harbor, Virgina, June 2-8, 1864

Petersburg, June15-July28, 1864

Chaffins's Farm, Virgina, September 28-29, 1864

Fort Harrison, Virginia, September 29-30, 1864

Fair Oaks, Virgina, October, 27, 1864

That's not the end of the story.  Louis apparently followed his brother, Henry, into the New York 96th Infantry.  According to military records, Henry Miner, age 18, from Ausable Forks, New York, enlisted as a private in the 96th, Company C, on December 1, 1861.  Henry was promoted to Full Corporal on November, 1, 1865 and mustered out of the 96th on February 6, 1866 at City Point, Virginia.  The whole regiment was disbanded on that date.

This information is supported by data from the 1860 U.S. Census.  A Census enumerator named W.C. Watson, Jr. visited the Essex County home of Joseph Miner in Ausable Forks, New York, on August 6, 1860.  This is the household information he recorded:

Joseph Miner, age 52, male,  (Nicholas Monast?)

Occupation: Iron Roller,

Value of Real Estate: 24

Value of Personal Estate: 200

Birthplace: Canada East (i.e., Quebec)

Can't read or write.

Natalia (or Natalie) Miner, age 48, female, Birthplace: Canada East, can't read or write. (Nathalia Parent)

Henry Miner, age 18, male, laborer, Birthplace: New York

Louis Miner, age 15, male, nail poker, Birthplace: New York

Isaac Miner, age 10, male, Birthplace: New York

Rosalie Miner, age 9, female, Birthplace: New York, attended school within year

Jimmis (Dennis?) Miner, age 5, male, Birthplace: New York

Joseph Miner Jr., age 25, male, laborer, Birthplace: Canada East, married within year, can't read or write

Emily Miner, age 21, female, Birthplace: New York, married within year, can't read or write

Some interesting observations and rough conclusions can be made from this information.

1.   The newlyweds, Joseph Jr. and Emily, were living in his father's household.  This was not uncommon then.

2.   Illiteracy was common then also.  It is doubtful that Joseph Sr. and Natalia spoke fluent English although the children probably did, especially those schooled.

3.   There were many Miner families and Quebec-born people in the area at that time, including Yelle and Shackette families.  A one Henry Miner, age 36, born in Canada East, lived in Ausable Forks in 1860 and was a nail slitter(?). Could this be a younger brother of Joseph Sr.?  It seems a few Miners worked in the ironworking crafts.

4.   Joseph Jr., was born about 1835 in Quebec.  Henry was born about 1842 in New York.  Thus, Joseph and Natalia moved to New York between 1835 and 1842.  The 1850 U.S. Census for Essex County, New York, shows a Joseph Miner as head of household but there is no further information on that household.  Most likely, it's our Joseph.

5.   Were there children between Joseph, age 25, and Henry, age 18?  Our family tree identifies Charles and Hattie as siblings of Louis.  They could have been born after 1860, but Natalia was 48 years old by then.  More likely, they married and moved away, or lived in other households as tenants/servants.

6.   No other Henry Miner, age18, or Louis Miner, age 15, show up in the 1860 U.S. Census for Essex County.   Thus, it is near certain that these are the Henry and Louis Miner that joined the 96th Infantry during the Civil War.

Based on family information and research, it is likely that Louis' French name was "Louis Monat dit Jolicoeur."  Miner is an Anglicized version of Monat. The dit name Jolicoeur means "happy heart" in French and distinguishes our Monat family from other Monat families.

Finally, it seems just yesterday that my great-grandmother, Harriet "Hattie" (Miner) Yelle, died. Louis married Melvina Shackette on March 5, 1867, a year after he left the army.  Hattie was born fifteen years later in March 10, 1882.   She died in 1988 two days before her 106th birthday.  And her father, Louis, was in the Civil War, a war the still defines our country today.  How much did Louis' war experience make him and his family feel they were part of America?

in Ware, MA, which is about six miles from where I live. Some of the

Miner/Monats came to Ware in the late 1800's which I already knew however I

Surname: MINO, MINER, POISSON

In the Marriages of Clinton County(NY)1830-1880, one finds a marriage for Charles MINO to Angélique POISSON at the Immaculate Conception Church, Keeseville, NY July 3, 1853. Witnesses were Harriet MINO and Joseph POISSON. Harriet is probably your Hattie MINER.
