Kincardine, census & Birth- Marriages- Deaths records from the vital stats
& many other materials. I do not know of any McAdam family members living
so this is the best that can be done. Maybe in the future someone will know
more.
Agnes Nancy Stewart was born
about 1813-1817, to Isaac
Stewart ( ( 1783c -
1871) & his wife Agnes Nancy ( Ann) Mackee, according to
her death certificate-
the informant was her son Isaac McAdam & that his
mother had been born
in Scotland. Nancy had married Thomas McAdam, Jr. son
of Thomas McAdam, Sr.
(1795c - 1874) & his wife Margaret (1798c - 1874)
the date &
location are not known, but it was probably in Huntington
Township, Hastings
County, Ontario, Canada, before 1851.
Thomas McAdam was born in
Greece in 1825, according to the
census of Huntington
Township, Hastings County in 1851. Thomas, Jr. was a
laborer & was an
Episcopalian & was 26 years old and was married to Nancy,
who was 33 yrs.
old. At that time they had no children.
Thomas's parents: Thomas
McAdam, Sr. & Margaret were also
in Huntington Twp. at
this time. Thomas, Sr. was a laborer & was born in
Ireland was 56 yrs old
& Episcopalian. Margaret his wife was 53 yrs. Living
with them was the
Rutherford brothers:
John - 32 yrs., Robert
- 28 yrs., and Adam 27 yrs. ( at this point I do not
know if they were
family or not.) the census says that they are not listed
as family members, but
they could have been distant relatives or charges.
Later when Margaret
dies in Huron Twp, Adam McAdam erects a stone in the
memory of Margaret
McAdam & is in the Kincardine Cemetary.
Thomas McAdam, Sr. was a
Pensioner, according to the 1861
Census of Huron Twp,
Divison 4, pg. 39. This was probably in Northern
Ireland & that he
at somepoint must have been in a war in Greece or of a
guarding type of
service. His son Thomas, Jr. was born in Greece according
to the 1851 Census of
Huntington Twp. Further investigation is needed in
this area.
Thomas & Agnes Nancy
Stewart McAdam's children were:
1. William John McAdam
- born in 1851c - probably Huntington Twp.
2. Elizabeth McAdam -
born September 5, 1853 - probably also Huntington, she
married Thomas Graham
on April 22, 1874 in Huntington ( Thomasville). They
had no children, but
brought up his sister's ( Eliza Graham Knight) when she
died in 1880. Her
husband had been Horace Knight ( no idea what ever
happened to him!)
3. Isaac McAdam who
was born on November 31, 1855 as stated on the 1900
Census for Hamiota,
Manitoba. Sure that it was also Huntington.
I am sure that all these
children were born in
Huntington Twp.,
Hastings County, Ontario., for the land of Huron Twp did
not open until the
1850's and the Durham Road was finished except for the
south section of
Kinardine in the fall of 1855. I am also very sure that the
McAdam's came tho
Bruce County , to Huron Twp. not only because of the
possibility of getting
Crown Land, but also they may have come for work.
Work crews were needed
to cut down trees and brush to make a road. Thomas
McAdam, Jr. died
because of a fall of a tree or maybe he contracted a virus
during the winter months,
as he helped. Unfortunetly, the Vital Statistics
don't go back that
far. Thomas, Jr. did die on Febuary 1, 1858 & his wife
had to go to the
Surrogate Court to declare he did not posses any personal
or real estate outside
of the limits of Bruce County, and that the personal
property that he did
own was only wrth $ 150.00. Thomas died intestate ( no
will ) and that he was
a resident of Huron Township. His depts were $ 14.30,
Agnes Nancy was able
to apply for letters of Administration
to receive the
personal estate &
effects. She made her mark - she could not write, also her
brothers John &
Thomas Stewart signed their names on documents also. Also
stated was that Thomas
McAdam, Jr. was a yeoman ( farmer).
Agnes Nancy Stewart McAdam lived
the rest of her life in Huron
Township, Bruce
County, Ontario with her family and she died on September
19, 1883 at the age of
66 yrs. of consumption ( T.B.) After her death, son
Isaac McAdam went out
to Hamiota, Manitoba and took up farming the lower
half of cousin James
Stewart's property. Before leaving,
Isaac McAdam
married Mary Ann ---
and on December 29, 1875 in Huron Twp., and they had 6
children:
1. Agnes May McAdam -
born on August 18, 1876 & babtised on May 11, 1878
2. Mary Ann " - born on March 23, 1878 & '''''
same date
3. Elizabeth Jane
" - born December 1, 1886
4. Martha Isabella
" - born October 25, 188?
5. Thomas John " - born December 25, 1885
6. William Andrew "
- born August 26, 1890
All these children were born in Ontario, except William John,
who
was born in
Manitoba. Both Agnes Mary & Mary
Ann were babtized by I. Crane
on may 11, 1878 in
Huron Twp, Bruce County, Ontario, in the Wesleyan
Methodist Church.
The 1871 Census for Huron Twp.
shows Margaret McAdam living wth
John Rutherford. She
is 73 yrs. old. The whereabouts of Thomas, Sr. are not
known. He didn't die
until 1874. Was he in Manitoba at the time of census
was taken??? Thomas
did die in 1874 & is buried with his wife in the
Kincardine Cemetary,
Bruce County, Ontario.
When & where the MCAdam's came
over from in Ireland is of
question. Further
research is needed. What army that Thomas, Sr. was a
pensioner from needs
more research also.
