Descendants of Samuel & Phoebe McAdam
Generation No. 1
1. SAMUEL1 MCADAM I was born 1793 in Ireland, and died Unknown. He married PHOEBE WIFE OF SAMUEL MCADAM I. She died Unknown.
Notes for SAMUEL MCADAM I:
We have evidence that our
McAdam family, Samuel and Phoebe and their children, were in Canada before the
potato famine of the 1840’s. According
to a notice in a Napanee newspaper dated June 18, 1831, "Letter waiting
for Samuel McAdam at the Napanee Post Office." It is very likely that Samuel and Phoebe McAdam had just arrived
in the area when a letter from friends or relatives back home in Ireland
arrived. Irish immigrants often kept
family and friends back home informed, especially as to opportunities for more
immigrants.
But the first
conclusive evidence of our family is the 1851 Canadian Census that showed Sam
(age 58) and Phoebe (age 57) living in Tyendinaga Township, Hastings County,
with their children John (age 30), Mary (age 28), and Samuel (age 25). All were born in Ireland. Thus, the family likely came to Canada
between 1826, when Samuel was born, and 1831, when the letter was announced.
David McAdam and
Robert McAdam may have been sons of
Samuel and Phoebe too. There is
evidence suggesting that David McAdam married Sarah Jane Cross in Tyendinaga
Township and settled in Hastings County near Samuel and Phoebe. David and many of his children are buried in
Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Rawdon Township, Hastings County.
A Robert McAdam lived
in Tyendinaga Township in 1851 near Samuel and Phoebe McAdam also. According to Anglican Church records, Robert
McAdam married Charlotte Dunning of Tyendinaga on February 7, 1855. On February 6, 1956, Robert and Charlotte
had a son, Samuel. No other information
what happened to Robert McAdam is available.
Children of SAMUEL MCADAM and PHOEBE MCADAM are:
2. i. JOHN2 MCADAM, b. 1821,
Ireland; d. Unknown.
ii. MARY MCADAM, b. 1823, Ireland; d. Unknown.
Notes for MARY MCADAM:
IT IS UNLIKELY THAT
MARY IS THE DAUGHTER OF SAMUEL & PHOEBE MCADAM.
The 1851 Census in
which Samuel and Phoebe are listed with Mary (Age 28), John and Samuel does not
confirm that Mary is their daughter. On
page two, there is a column for Residents, Members and Non-Members. Mary McAdam is listed as a Non-Member which
could mean she is not the daughter of Sam & Phoebe. Is Mary the wife of another McAdam, maybe
another son of Sam & Phoebe's such as David or Robert? A cousin or the wife of a cousin
perhaps? It could mean that Mary is a
daughter who was visiting the day that the Census was taken. But it was very
unusual then that unmarried women lived away from home. There are a number of
possible explanations.
Records at the
Episcopal Church in the Tyendinaga area show that a David & Mary McAdam had
a daughter, Mary Ann, in Tyendinaga on April 9, 1856. Also, on September 27, 1850, James Scott & Mary McAdam were
sponsors for the baptism of June Elizabeth McAdam, daughter of Mary &
______ McAdam. One of these Mary's could be the Mary in the 1851 Census of
Samuel and Phoebe's home in Tyendinaga.
3. iii. DAVID MCADAM, b. 1825, Ireland; d. May 8, 1895.
4. iv. SAMUEL MCADAM II, b. 1826, Ireland; d. July 17, 1885, Tamworth,
Ontario.
5. v. ROBERT MCADAM, b. 1828, Ireland; d. April 5, 1888, Stella, Cowlitz County, Washington.
Generation No. 2
2. JOHN2 MCADAM (SAMUEL1) was born 1821 in Ireland, and died Unknown. He married ANN PYER. She died Unknown.
Notes for JOHN MCADAM:
Family lore has it
that one of the McAdam brothers moved west. This could be John. The following information strongly suggest
that John married Ann Pyer, had a son, and moved west to Huron County as a
pioneer.
1. According to
Anglican Church records, Samuel Stuart McAdam, son of John and Ann McAdam, was
born August 30, 1853 and baptized October 2, 1863 in Tyendinaga Township,
Hastings County, Ontario.
2. According to the
Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid, there are five McAdams buried in Wroxeter
Presbyterian Cemetery (abandoned), Howick Township, Huron County, Ontario. They
are Ann McAdam, Ann (Pyer) McAdam (w/o John McAdam), Jane (i/d/o John & Ann
McAdam) McAdam, John McAdam, and Samuel Stewart McAdam.
3. According to the
1871 Ontario Census, John McAdam lived in Huron North, Howick, Division 3. He was
a 50 year old head of household, born in Ireland in 1820 or 1821, was a
Presbyterian, occupied as laborer.
4. The 1851 Census
shows that John McAdam, living with Samuel and Phoebe McAdam, was born about
1821.
Children of JOHN MCADAM and ANN PYER are:
i. JANE3 MCADAM, d. Unknown.
ii. SAMUEL STUART MCADAM, b. August 30, 1853, Tyendinaga Township, Hastings
County, Ontario; d. Unknown.

4. SAMUEL2 MCADAM II (SAMUEL1) was born 1826 in Ireland, and died July 17, 1885 in
Tamworth, Ontario. He married ELIZA JANE BROWN, daughter of
THOMAS
BROWN
and ELIZABETH MCGOWAN. She was born
1830 in Ireland, and died 1908.
Notes for SAMUEL MCADAM II:
Samuel McAdam Jr. was
born circa 1826 in Ireland, the son of Samuel and Phoebe McAdam. It has not yet been discovered how or when
the family came to Canada. However,
according to the Canadian Census of 1851, they lived on Lot 21, Concession 2 of
Tyendenaga township, Hastings County, Ontario.
At that time they were formers, and the south end of their land bordered
on the Salmon River. The household at
that time consisted of Samuel and Phoebe and their children John, Mary and
Samuel Jr. Two other McAdam families
lived nearby, and they may also have been children of Samuel and Phoebe.
Sometime within the
next three years, Samuel Jr. married Eliza Jane Brown, second eldest daughter
of Thomas and Elizabeth Brown. Eliza
Jane was born circa 1830 aboard a boat from Ireland en route to Canada on the
Atlantic Ocean. The Browns, a family of twelve, were Anglican and lived in an
Irish settlement in Sheffield township, Lennox and Addington County, Ontario,
in 1851. Source: Research of Vivian

Margrette Downing was listed in the 1900 census as living with daughter
Charlotte, they were both widows at that time. States also that Margette was 71
yrs old. So that puts her 1829 as her birth and looking at the date of her
daughters birth that does not figure into the picture. I have to look for her
death date and then figure it all out. I do not have the husband/fathers name.
Charlotte had a brother James that was also in Stella during this time. I have
not research the Downings like I should. Hopefully I can get to it!!! I think that I didn't do anymore because I

Notes for MARY ELLEN KEECH:
According to Milton
Bruce McAdam, Sr., in 1954, Mary Ellen (Keech) McAdam was living with her daughter
Florence (McAdam) Kimmett in Sacketts Harbor, Jefferson County, NY (although
she may have been staying with her other daughter, Angeline (McAdam) Froysell,
a few miles away in Chaumont, New York).
Apparently, Mary Ellen became very ill in the Summer or early Autumn
from causes he can't recall. Because
Mary Ellen was still a Canadian citizen and had family in the Kingston area,
she was moved to a Kingston hospital where she qualified for insurance. Bruce
and his Uncle, Bob Froysell, took Mary Ellen by car to the Kingston hospital in
the Fall sometime. It was pleasant
weather when they went. Mary Ellen died
on December 6, 1954 and was brought back to the Sacketts Harbor Cemetery where
her husband was buried.

York.
Notes for JAMES WESLEY MCADAM:
Tribute to James
Wesley McAdam
as told by his
daughter, Anne (McAdam) Johnson
on March 1999, in
Florida
James Wesley McAdam
was born on May 23, 1894 near Norway Lake in Lennox and Addington County,
Ontario, Canada. His father was a red-head named James Watson McAdam. His mother was Mary Ellen Keech, Watson's
second wife. Grandpa Watson (as we
called him) first married Rebecca Doolan.
Watson and Rebecca had two children, Mary Agnes who married George
Wager, and John Henry (also known as "Black Jack") who married Mary
Agnes Flynn. "Uncle John" was
very close to Wesley, his younger half brother. In Grandpa Watson's second marriage, he and Mary Ellen had four
daughters named - Annie, Florence, Angeline, and Nora - and one son, James
Wesley, my father.
What do I say about a
man who has been dead for 49 years? He
was a very gentle, loving, caring and kind man. He loved babies and he loved holding them. He did what he could for everyone. He loved all his children very much and was
very proud of them.
Dad graduated from the
Belleville School for the Deaf in Belleville, Ontario. He was an excellent athlete, excelling in
all sports, especially hockey. He could
have played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, but his lack of hearing kept him
out. This must have hurt him
badly. At that time, and until a very
few years ago, hearing handicapped people were kept out of sight as much as
possible.
After school, Wesley
worked at a post office in Kingston, Ontario.
But the pay was so small he had nothing left after rent and food to
enjoy himself. Then, in 1918 during the
World War, he got a job in the Goodyear plant in Toronto. He liked working there but it was affecting
his health. He decided to go to the West Coast on "The Harvest
Train." This cost him $20 and he had to bring his own food.
Dad first went to
Saskatchewan with some deaf friends, but could not find a job. In Manitoba, he finally got a job surveying
for a lumber company, the Flin Flan Co. At that time people in droves were
putting in mining claims for copper and other metals. Dad was asked to put in a claim but he refused because he would
have had to stay on the claim for 16 months.
The claim later became very lucrative.
In November 1922, Dad
heard about this good-looking deaf girl in Battleford, Saskatchewan, so he went to visit her. Her father wanted Wesley to come and work
for him. But Wesley wasn't quite ready
yet. However, in April 1923, Wesley
returned; and on June 11, 1923, he married that girl, our mother, Catherine
Hammond. Catherine's father, Colin
Arthur Hammond, fixed up an apartment in the granary for the newlyweds. Mother said they were snug and warm. They stayed in Battleford for two
years. I was born in May 1924.
Wesley and his family
moved back East in June 1925 and settle at the Sam and Eliza's McAdam house in
Marlbank, Ontario. Watson and Mary Ellen went to Rainey River in Western
Ontario, but returned when it was too hard to farm there. Wesley was a
beekeeper for a short time. While in
Marlbank, he worked in a barrel factory for $2.00 and hour. Ronald was born
March 28, 1926.
In May 1926, Mother,
Father and us two children went to Cape Vincent, New York, by boat. Dad rented a house in Glen Park, New York,
with his parents, Watson and Mary Ellen.
For a while he did odd jobs in the area. Eventually, they went to live with Uncle Percy Kimmett and Aunt
Florence, Wesley's sister, on the Kimmett's farm in Sacketts Harbor, New
York. They then found a small house up
the road. Gloria was born there January
29, 1928. Philip McAdam was born there on September 8, 1930, a few days after
Grandpa Watson died of a heart attack.
At the time, Wesley was helping to build the big high school in
Watertown, which is now the junior high school on Washington Street.
We then moved with
Grandma Mary Ellen onto the farm where Dad worked. We lived there for two years.
I started school in the Stone school which still stands. The economic depression was hurting
everyone. Milton Lee then asked Wesley
to move to Pillar Point. Milton Bruce
McAdam was born there on October 30, 1932, named after Milton Lee. Other close friends, Henry and Mary Gilbert,
moved in with us. Henry had lost his
job. We then moved to the Hamberg Farm on Pillar Point where James Wesley Jr.
was born on September 1, 1934.
In March 1935, we
moved to Point Peninsula across Chaumont Bay from Pillar Point. We moved across the ice, took the cows and
horses, the car and the furniture in wagons.
Colin was born May 18, 1937. We
stayed on Pt. Peninsula for five years.
We all loved it. The one room
schoolhouse was almost at our front door.
On February 28, 1939, Ronald was killed. It was a sad time for everyone.
Times were hard; the Depression was with everyone; milk was cheap and it
was hard on the dairy farms.
We moved to the Brown
house in Limerick, New York, in May 1940.
Larry was born there on June 2, 1942.
We then moved to Perch River in 1943, where the "Perch River
Supper" picture was taken. In the
meantime, Dad worked for Dexter Sulphite paper mill in Dexter. He loved it. It was steady work, which was important because he had a large
family to raise. He was one of those
people who wouldn't stay home. If the
roads were snowed in, he would get up early and walk to work. He was always there and gave it all he had.
At the Dexter
Sulphite, he made $25 per week. Imagine
trying to raise a family on that today.
We didn't go without essentials, however. Dad inherited a Model A Ford from his parents in 1933. He was always very proud of his car. In 1940, he bought a Dodge. Work at the paper mill was good during World
War II. We always had a big beautiful
garden. Mother did a lot of canning. Life was hard but we all go through it.
Dad contacted cancer
in 1950 and was sick for a year. Bruce
took care of him and tried to make his life as easy as possible. Dad died on September 13, 1951. At that time they didn't have chemotherapy
or radiation treatment. The doctors
gave him morphine shots to keep him comfortable. When he died, he left his wife Catherine and seven children -
Anne, Gloria, Philip, Bruce, James Wesley Jr., Colin and Larry. We all miss him very much.
THE ONTARIO SCHOOL FOR
THE DEAF
In 1869, at the urging
of John B. McGann, a pioneer educator of the hearing impaired, the Ontario
government sanctioned the establishment of the first provincial school for deaf
children. A residential institution combining elementary school instruction with
vocational training, the Ontario Institution for the Education of the Deaf and
Dumb was officially opened in October 1870. Increasing enrolment during the
following decades led to steady expansion and improvement of facilities. When
curricula were revised and advanced academic instruction introduced during the
tenure of Dr. Charles B. Coughlin (1906-28), the school gained wide recognition
for its contributions to special education. Renamed the Ontario School for the
Deaf in 1913, it became the Sir James Whitney School in 1974 in honour of
Ontario’s sixth prime minister.

SAMUEL THOMAS GREENE
1843 - 1890
Samuel Greene was the
first deaf teacher in the Ontario school system. An American by birth, he was educated
at the National Deaf-Mute College, now Gallaudet University, in Washington, D.
C. After graduating in 1870, he came to teach at the new provincial school for
the deaf in Belleville (later Sir James Whitney School). Believing that the
education of deaf children should be based on solid language skills, Greene
devised a progressive and highly successful method of teaching that used sign
language and written English. Co-founder and first president of the Ontario
Association of the deaf, he was renowned for his eloquent public addresses and
poetry recitations in sign language.

Notes for CATHERINE HAMMOND:
Catherine Hammond
McAdam Roach died on March 24, 1994 in Oswego, New York at the age of 91. An
only child, the McAdams were her only family. Her strength and character
touched all of us. Her spirit lives in all of us. We will miss her dearly. The
following is her story as told by her daughter, Anne McAdam, at a surprise
birthday party for Catherine at the Kingston Reunion.
Catherine was born
November 4, 1902 in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada. Her parents are Colin and Anne
Louise Hammond. She graduated from the Belleville School for the Deaf, where
she was an excellent student and good athlete. About 1920, her father took her
and her Mother to the great west of Canada against her Mother’s wishes. They
finally settled in North Battleford, Saskatchewan to raise wheat and other
crops.
In 1922, James Wesley
McAdam, a handsome deaf young man, heard about this beautiful deaf girl in
North Battleford, so he decided to look for himself. He must have liked what he
found because a year later in June 1923, Wesley married Catherine. Wesley also
went to work for Catherine's father on the farm.
Within a year on May
4, 1924, a black hair, brown eyed daughter was born named Anne. A bad drought
and no money forced Wesley and Catherine back to Marlbank, Ontario where
Wesley's parents, James Watson McAdam, lived. In the early spring of 1926, a
blue eyed, redheaded boy was born and named Ronald Colin.
In 1927, seeking to
make their own way in this world, Wesley and his family moved to Sacketts
Harbor, New York, which is located in the United States on Lake Ontario. There
on January 29, 1928, Gloria, an auburn hair, brown-eyed girl, was born. On
September 8, 1930, Philip Watson with blond hair and blue eyes was born. One
week earlier, however, Wesley's father, Watson who had also moved to New York,
died. Wesley and Catherine took over Watson's farm.
The family then moved
to Pillar Point, New York, also on Lake Ontario a few miles from Sacketts
Harbor, and the children kept coming. Milton Bruce was born on October 31,
1932; James Wesley was born on September 1, 1934; and Colin Hammond on May 18,
1937. Last came Lawrence Arthur on June 2, 1942 after the family had moved to
Perch River.
In 1937, tragedy
struck the family when Ronald, then 11 years old, was killed by a car while
riding a snow sled on Point Peninsula, New York, the family home at the time.
Tragedy struck again when Catherine's husband, Wesley, died of cancer on
September 13, 1951.
With all the children
growing up quickly, Catherine married, in 1953, a kind truck mechanic named
Harold Roach who was also deaf. They lived in Sandy Creek, New York, briefly
before finally settling in Mexico, New York. He and Catherine traveled often.
Harold died in November 1984.
In all, Catherine has
8 children, 16 grand children, and, so far, 20 great-grandchildren.
